Intensive Course in Arabic The Institute for Arabic Studies at Givat Haviva offers an intensive course for the study of the Arabic language. This course trains its graduates in the fields of writing, reading, listening to the media, speaking Arabic, and study of Islam and the Middle East. The course is held during the months of November-March with dormitory facilities. Opening date: Sunday, November 4, 2007 at 09:00. Course Curriculum: 18 weekly hours of literary Arabic, 14 hours of spoken Arabic, 10 hours of Arabic in the media, 4 hours of Middle Eastern studies and Islam. Total 46 weekly hours. In addition, individual tutoring and exercises during the evening hours. Some of the lessons in spoken Arabic are held in the language laboratory. During the course students visit nearby Arab villages. Structure of the Course: 6 days per week, 8 hours of study per day. Two additional hours of group and individual tutoring after study hours. Students have full use of language laboratory and library for the topics studied. Admission to the course is not dependent upon prior knowledge of Arabic. In the framework of the course students may sit for the Bagrut (Matriculation) examination at the level of 4-5 study units. Cost of the course is NIS 21,000 including dormitories. “Beginners” and “Advanced” Course in Arabic – Weekly Year Course Purpose of the course: Teaching basic knowledge to hold a conversation in spoken Arabic, acquaintance with the written language, reading texts, reading a newspaper, listening to the media. Course program: 2 weekly hours of literary Arabic (9:00-11:00), 4 weekly study hours of spoken Arabic (11:00-15:00). Course duration: First year, “Arabic for Beginners” – 200 hours Second year, “Advanced Arabic” – 200 hours Third year, “Arabic Stage 3” – 200 hours Dates: Every Wednesday, 09:00-15:00 Opening Date: Wednesday, October 17, 2007. Courses are recognized for in-service training credit: for students who are not education workers and for teachers in an individual track (with no grade). Price of the course: NIS 5,000. Arabic for Beginners and Advanced – Evening Courses Evening courses in Arabic at the Institute for Arabic Studies at Givat Haviva. Purpose of the course: Study of spoken Arabic, in the local vernacular, to the level of holding a conversation. Duration of the course: 100 hours, 30 sessions, November-July. Course hours: Every Sunday, 18:30-21:00 – “Advanced Arabic” Course. Every Wednesday, 18:30-21:00 – “Arabic for Beginners” Course. Opening date: Monday, October 22, 2007, “Arabic for Beginners.” Course Venue: Institute for Arabic Studies Classroom at Givat Haviva. Price of the course: NIS 3,000. Registration: In order to reserve your place in the course, send registration fee of NIS 100. This sum will be counted towards full payment for the course. Intensive Course in Spoken Arabic Purpose of the course: Study of spoken Arabic in the local vernacular. Duration of the course: Approx. five months, November-March. Course hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 15:00-18:00. Opening date: Monday, November 5, 2007, 15:00. Course Program: Studies in the framework of the “Middle Eastern Studies Class,” including studies in the language laboratory, speaking workshops led by Arab facilitators, study tours and meetings in local villages. * On days of study tours there will be special programs, the hours will be determined during the course.
