Haviva [Emma] Reik was born in Slovakia in 1914. As a youngster she joined “Hashomer Hatzair” youth movement. In 1939 she immigrated to Israel and became a member of Kibbutz Ma’anit. During the second world war she joined the British army and on September 21, 1944 parachuted behind the enemy’s lines in Slovakia. There she joined the partisans and with her comrades started organizing an independent Jewish unit. “Every day we are alive is a gift from heaven”, she wrote in one of her letters. Haviva Reik was captured, and executed by the Nazis on November 20, 1944. A boat of Jewish refugees “Haviva Reik”, Kibbutz Lehavot Haviva and the education center Givat Haviva were named in her memory.
