| BRITISH TRADE UNIONISTS VISIT GIVAT HAVIVA |
A group of 11 delegates representing different British Trade Unions visited Givat Haviva recently. Under the leadership of Manchester-based Doreen Gerson, director of The Trade Union Friends of Israel (TUFI), the trade unionists five-day program in Israel and the Palestinian territories was very tight indeed. Their visit to Givat Haviva was the last item on the program before having dinner with British Ambassador Simon McDonald at his private residence and then flying home. "After a particularly hectic programme it has been marvelous to round off our Israel trip with a visit to Givat Haviva and hear about some of the successful projects that are being carried out here," Doreen Gerson and TUFI chairman Roger Lyons told Givat Haviva spokesperson Dudu Amitai. The Israel visit was aimed to build links between British trade unions and Israeli and Palestinian counterparts and to encourage greater understanding of the complex issues surrounding the Middle East peace process. "I am pleased that I had the opportunity to visit Israel," commented Vi Carr of the British Bakers Union. "I am very impressed by the tireless work done by the Givat Haviva staff with both young and adult Israelis and Palestinians trying to bring them together in friendship and peace and certainly hope that goal will be reached." Colin O'Callaghan of the Communication Workers Union summed up his visit to Israel and particularly to Givat Haviva as amazing. "We could not have been brought closer to the heart of Middle East politics than on this trip," said Mr. O'Callaghan. TUFI plans to bring more delegations of the British Trade Unionists to the region over the coming months and Givat Haviva will definitely be on their itinerary promised Doreen Gerson, who has brought a number of groups previously to visit the campus over the last decade.
